oMake a card for a teammate. On a rainy day or a holiday (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day; Valentine’s Day) athletes could draw the name of a teammate (out of a hat) and make a card for that person. Athletes can be encouraged to write and describe ways in which their teammates are important to the team. Coaches could bring nice paper, pens, markers, etc. and allow athletes to be creative in preparing their cards. At the end of the session, athletes could present their homemade cards to their teammates. Some teams may find it motivating to read aloud the cards they wrote for their teammates but some might prefer to keep it private. There are many versions of this activity. Every athlete could have a sheet of paper with their name at the bottom, and sitting in a circle, the sheets could be passed around, giving each athlete a chance to write an anonymous comment on the sheet. After a comment is added, the athlete who wrote it can fold the paper over and pass it to the next person in the circle. Another way to do this is to tape small posters on the wall and allow athletes to circulate and write comments on each of their teammates’ posters. The aim in all these activities is to help athletes support one another.

oShare kudos to teammates publicly. At the end of practice or competition, coaches could give athletes an opportunity to speak aloud a compliment to a teammate. Athletes would have a chance to give a shout out to their teammates and might say things like,
